The Junior Development Squad (JDS) is a program aimed at giving our talented athletes a little more in terms of coaching, education, competition and a sense of accomplishment. Athletes must qualify for the squad by achieving athletic results that better a set performance criteria.

The squad is open to all registered athletes from U/12 to U/15 that meet the performance criteria. Ranging from mid October to late February, the program consists of numerous activities including coaching days, alternate coaching sessions, coaching camp, education sessions, role model sessions with elite athletes and a presentation ceremony.

Qualifying

The JDS is open to all qualified athletes in the Under 12 to Under 15 age groups.

Athletes must qualify and re-apply each year to become members.  JDS registration runs from 1st October to 30th September yearly. Athletes may register immediately upon qualifying to take advantage of the current season's activities and benefits or defer to the commencement of the following season.

To be eligible for application, an athlete must perform better than the qualifying standard in one of the following:

  • Record one performance in the same event twice at two different LAVic sanctioned athletics meet.
  • Record one performance in two different events that better the qualifying standards at any LAVic sanctioned athletics meet. (Performances must be signed off by Centre Executive member.)
  • 1st to 8th inclusive at the State Cross Country Championships can be counted as a performance for one qualifying event.
  • 1st to 8th inclusive at the State Multi Event Championships.

Results from the following events are also accepted: VPSSA & VSSSA State Championships and Athletics Victoria sanctioned events.

Qualifying performances must be current to the age of the athlete at the time of the athletes application. eg. If an U/13 athlete applies, they must have U/13 qualifying performances.

Qualifying for athletes with disabilities is calculated using the same percentages of National Records as the able body qualifying standards. For example an U/12 able body girl in the 200m needs to run a time that is 128% of the National Record. An U/12 girl athlete with a disability needs to run a time that is 128% of the National Record for her particular class of disability.

The Application Form (available from LAVic) must be fully completed and sent to LAVic.  The application form, together with copies of the performances must be signed by a Kew Little Athletics Centre Executive.

The qualifying standards are detailed at the bottom of this page.
